Defining Domestic Violence


DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
 IS DEFINED AS:

The forceful, controlling behavior that coerces a victim to do what the abuser wants without regard to her/his rights, body, health or emotions.

TYPES OF ABUSE INCLUDE…

 Physical Abuse

Kicking, choking, slapping

Shoving, restraining

The use of an object as a weapon

Psychological or Emotional Abuse

Humiliating remarks, words that hurt

Name calling, stalking, threats

Isolation from friends/family

Destruction of pets or property

Sexual Abuse

Forced sex, unwanted touching

Any type of sex that makes a partner feel uncomfortable

Coercion to perform perverted sexual acts

Property or Financial Abuse

No access to or knowledge of household income

Food, medical and/or hygiene needs unmet

Unable to buy necessities for self/children

No legal right to property
